Rs 400 Airbag for Tata Nano!

The soon to be launched world's cheapest car, Tata Nano is not going to be a compromise on safety. Tata is on talks with a company called AutolivIFB to develop an airbag for the Nano. The airbags like the car, are going to be ultra low cost with each costing only Rs 400! Currently the cheapest airbags in India are the ones on the Zen Estilo at Rs 6000 each!

The airbags might however be available only on the top-end variants. This airbag development may also hint at Tata's intentions to sell the Nano in Europe where airbags are a must. This is a commendable effort by Tata in not compromising on safety while trying to keep costs low.

NANO COMPETES WITH THE WORLD!

Tata Motors also has other big plans for the Nano. The Nano is set to compete for the Progressive Automotive X Prize, a US$10 million prize for the car that crosses 100mpg or 42.5kpl. To win this prize, Nano has to compete with 70 cars from around the globe. The contest is not only about driving with an extremely light foot but to win the Nano will also have to race other competitors!

The Nano that competes in this race wont be a normal petrol engined version but a petrol-electric hybrid! Tata also plans to compete in the alternate fuel category with a purely electric Nano. This race will also be a good brandbuilding excercise for Tata in the USA.
